Six of them happen inside your flat. One needs shoes. All of them are done together, and every one of them fits in an evening that was already going to be a write-off.
What can you do for date night when you're too tired to plan?
Pick one finished mission and follow the steps. Tired couples aren't short of ideas, they're short of the energy it takes to decide between them. If the real problem is that every weekend looks the same, that's a different fix and it has its own article. Put one song on in a dark kitchen. Read the news of your day into a spoon. Draw each other's face without looking at the paper. Eight minutes counts as a date night if something actually happens in it.
Quick pick by how wrecked you are
- You're not getting off the couch: The Sofa Senate.
- You've got five minutes and nothing else: The Fridge Light Disco.
- You've been talking on calls all day: Blind Portraits, no talking required.
- You're hungry and nothing is planned: The Same Letter Shop Run.
- You'll fall asleep unless you go outside: Ten Lit Windows.
Three missions for when neither of you is getting up again
These run inside the flat, in whatever you're already wearing. Nothing to buy, nothing to set up, and the longest one is fifteen minutes.
The Fridge Light Disco
What you needa phone, a fridge, two songs.
How to play- Stand in the kitchen. Turn off every light in there.
- Open the fridge door. That's your lighting for the evening.
- Each of you picks one song from the year you turned fourteen. Play them back to back, full volume.
- Whoever picked the song leads. The other one copies whatever they do, exactly, for the whole track. Nobody gets to stand with folded arms during the other one's pick.
- For the last thirty seconds of the second song, close the fridge and finish it in the dark.
eight minutes. Two songs and the walk to the kitchen.
One detail that mattersfourteen is the right year to raid. Old enough that you owned the song on purpose, young enough that your taste was indefensible. That's exactly why the kitchen light stays off.
The Nine O'Clock News
What you needtwo spoons, a couch, the voice recorder on your phone.
How to play- Sit next to each other. Hit record.
- One of you is the anchor, the other is the correspondent. The anchor holds a spoon like a microphone and reads out today: what happened, who said what, breaking developments at approximately 14:40.
- The anchor throws to the correspondent twice. Once for weather, meaning the mood in the office or the queue at the post office. Once for sport, meaning who won something today and by how much.
- Swap roles. The second bulletin covers the other one's day.
- Sign off together with the same sentence, said at the same time. If you fumble it, record it again until you land it clean.
- Save the file with today's date in the title. Play one back in a year.
fifteen minutes for both bulletins.
One detail that mattersthe broadcast voice does all the work. Say "our correspondent spent this morning at the dentist" in a full anchor voice and an ordinary Tuesday becomes an event, without either of you having to be funny on purpose.
Blind Portraits
What you needtwo sheets of paper, two pens, a timer.
How to play- Sit facing each other, paper on your knees.
- Ninety seconds on the clock. Draw the other one's face. Two rules: your eyes stay on their face the entire time, never on the paper, and your pen never leaves the page.
- Swap papers. Ninety seconds again, and add three upgrades to the portrait of yourself. A hat, a scar, a second chin, whatever the face is asking for.
- Hold your finished portrait up next to your actual face and hold the expression the drawing gave you. Ten seconds, no dropping it early. Both of you at once.
- Stick them on the fridge. They stay there until a visitor asks.
ten minutes.
One detail that mattersthe pen never leaving the page is the whole mechanism. Lift it and you start correcting yourself. Keep it down and you get one continuous wire of a face, usually with three eyebrows and an ear somewhere near the jaw.
The tiredest thing you two do all week is decide.
Takyo is the app that hands you both a mission at the same time, neither of you knows the next step, the first date is free.
Three missions for when there's a bit left in the tank
Still low effort, but you'll be sitting up, and one of them puts shoes on you.
The Sofa Senate
What you neednothing. The remote gets promoted to ceremonial object.
How to play- You two are now the entire government of this flat. Sit down. Session open.
- Each of you proposes five laws for the household. Serious ones you actually want ("nobody answers work messages after nine"). Idiotic ones ("whoever gets out of bed last names the day"). Mix them.
- A law passes only if you both vote yes. One vote each, straight up or down, no trading and no campaigning.
- Write every law that passes on a piece of paper and tape it somewhere visible.
- One passed law has to take effect in the next five minutes. Pick the one you can do right now and do it.
- Swear it in properly. Both of you stand on the couch, one hand on the remote, say the law out loud at full volume.
twenty minutes.
One detail that mattersthe five minute rule is what stops this turning into a household admin meeting. If nothing on your list can happen tonight, your laws are too sensible. Write worse ones.
The Sock Draft
What you needthe pile of clean laundry that's been living on the chair.
How to play- Dump the pile on the floor between you. Sit on opposite sides of it.
- Take turns picking one item each, out loud, like a draft. Name the pick and justify it. "First round, the grey hoodie, proven performer, never let me down."
- Whoever picks an item folds it immediately. An unfolded pick doesn't count and goes back on the pile.
- Socks only count if you find the matching one in the same turn. Miss it and your turn ends there.
- If there's a fitted sheet in the pile, it gets folded by four hands at once, and it has to end up square. No cheating it into a ball.
- Everything nobody claimed by the end, the odd socks and the mystery T-shirt, goes on over the clothes you're already wearing. Both of you. It stays on for the rest of the evening.
fifteen minutes, depending on how long that chair has been collecting.
One detail that mattersthis is the only mission here that leaves the flat better than it found it, which nobody believes until they're eleven minutes in wearing three odd socks and holding a square fitted sheet.
The Same Letter Shop Run
What you needshoes, a card, the nearest shop that's still open.
How to play- Before you leave the flat, one of you says a letter out loud. Any letter you can both live with.
- Walk to the nearest open shop together. Everything you buy for tonight's dinner starts with that letter. Everything.
- Eight minutes inside, timer running. One basket, and every item needs a yes from both of you.
- Budget: whatever a takeaway would have cost tonight, not a coin more.
- The last twenty meters back to your door are done at a run. Both of you, bags and all.
- Dinner is whatever came home with you. Nothing gets added from the cupboard unless it starts with the letter too.
twenty to thirty minutes including eating it.
One detail that matterspick a letter with range. P hands you pasta, peppers, peanut butter and pears. Q hands you a long walk home and a serious conversation about your choices.
One mission that gets you out of the flat for twenty minutes
Some kinds of tired get worse indoors. This one is for the evening where you're both fading but sitting down would finish you off.
Ten Lit Windows
What you needshoes, a jacket, twenty minutes, phones in pockets.
How to play- Walk out and go around the block. No destination, no shop, no phones out.
- Count lit windows out loud as you pass them. Stop walking at number ten.
- Window ten is yours now. Standing on the pavement, decide together who lives there: name, job, what's on their stove, what they argue about, and the one thing nobody else in the building knows about them.
- Build the person one detail at a time, alternating, and neither of you can say no to the other's detail. You can only add to it.
- On the way home, both of you run one full lap around the same lamppost, then carry on walking like nothing happened.
twenty to twenty five minutes.
One detail that mattersadd-only is what makes this work when you're empty. Neither of you has to come up with the good idea, you just have to say the next thing. It's also why the invented neighbour usually ends up with a boat licence and an unresolved feud with the ground floor.
Why the show always wins on a tired night
The show wins because it's the only option on the table with no decision in front of it. Press one button, done. Everything else asks who's choosing, who's booking, who's driving, and that question costs more than the tiredness does.
A film and a blanket is a genuinely good evening, so keep it. Just put one mission before it. Eight minutes of dark kitchen disco and then the show, in that order, and the evening now contains something that happened.
The order is the trick. Choose the mission before you sit down, because whatever you sit down doing without deciding, you keep doing until bed.
What if only one of you is wrecked?
The flatter one picks, the other one runs it. Whoever has less left chooses which mission it is, out of the two or three that fit tonight, and then hands over the steering: the other one reads the steps out loud, sets the timers, and starts things.
Scale down too. Take the eight minute mission, not the twenty five minute one. And swap the physical beats over: the one with something left does the lamppost lap and the run to the door, the other one counts. And if the kids are up too, run one of the after-dinner family missions instead and count it as the evening.
FAQ
What can we do for date night when we're both exhausted?
Something that already has the steps written down. Two songs in a dark kitchen, ninety seconds of drawing each other's face, one walk around the block with a rule attached to it. Spend the energy on doing it, never on deciding what it is.
Does date night still count if we never leave the house?
It counts when something happens that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Half watching a film together is a perfectly good evening on its own. Ten minutes of mission on top of it is the part that ends up taped to the fridge.
How long does a date night need to be when you have no energy?
Ten minutes, as long as it has a clear finish. Everything in this article runs between eight and thirty minutes, and the short ones aren't the weak ones. A visible end is what makes a tired couple start at all.
Is it okay to skip date night when you're too tired?
Yes. Then cut the ambition instead of the night: one song, one drawing, one lap of the block. Eight minutes is a real date night, a cancelled Friday is a Friday.
Why do we always end up scrolling instead of doing something?
Because the phone is the only thing available that requires no decision from either of you. Every other option opens with a question about who picks and who organises. Take that question away and the evening opens up on its own.
What are date night ideas that need no money and no planning?
Six of the seven here cost nothing, and the seventh replaces a takeaway you were going to buy anyway. Paper, two pens, two spoons, a fridge, the laundry chair, shoes. Nothing to book, nothing to order, nothing to think about.
In a year you'll play back a recording of two people reading the weather off a spoon, and neither of you will remember which Tuesday it was. Sort out tonight in two minutes at takyo.cz.
